You Had Me at Homemade Whipped Cream

This morning when I knew Kelsey, Caleb, and Harvey would be here for supper I thought—Perfect time to try out a new recipe!

Immediately I knew I wanted to try this shortbread recipe with homemade whipped cream. Caleb loves homemade whipped cream and I knew everyone would love the shortbread with fruit. In her cookbook, The Lost Kitchen*, Erin French talks often about “foraging” for your ingredients and using what you find in nature or your yard. I thought—I have food growing in my yard. I don’t usually pick it at once and to use in a recipe, but Erin inspired me to make the most of what I have. All the fruit came from our backyard—yes, really! We have peaches, raspberries, and blackberries—all growing by their own perseverance as we do very little to keep them producing.

The recipe was fabulous! It calls for a little candied ginger, which adds an unexpected cozy taste.

The Grand loved it, of course. He loved the shortbread and especially loved the blackberries, which are pretty sour. He puckers up with each berry, but goes back for another. What a hoot!

I love feeding my family. I love making meals special in little ways. It’s one way I love my family or whomever is around our table. For me, feeding my family and friends is one way I build relationships.

PS—I am sorry the pic does not show the shortbread well. I was so excited to eat it that I didn’t take time for a better pic.
