The Best Parts of My Life Are the Small Things

The best parts of my life are mostly small things.

The best part of my day yesterday was my whole day with this little guy. I loved going to his two-year-old checkup with his mama. Then he came home with me so Kelsey could help a dear friend.

On the way home we stopped at Target to buy new balls (Remi destroyed his favorite one.). Once home we played inside and out. My role was to push the swing and tell him what wonderful chalk drawing he made (it’s a house if you couldn’t tell).

We had a wonderful time at meals and bath time and reading a couple of books a dozen times each.

Today amidst laundry and internalizing the material for Saturday’s conference* more small things made up the best part of my day—watering flowers, swinging on my porch swing on the deck, coffee with Gene, checking on the progress of my soon-to-bloom sunflowers.

I started this blog yesterday but didn’t finish it because I thought it was nothing special, nothing you would want to read or be blessed by. But today I realized (again) the best parts of my life are most often small things—a text or phone call from one of the girls, lunch with Kelsey and The Grand, meeting a friend, enjoying my yard. My joy challenge is teaching me to see the small things and in doing so I discover how life-giving they are. Each is a gift from God that resonates with the real me.

If you follow me on Instagram you know I often post pictures of the sunrise I see from our deck. Why do I do that? Because I feel I must capture the beauty of the first light. I’m not a great photographer, but taking pictures of my day makes me happy. It’s part of who I am.

I hope by sharing the best parts of my day you will notice the best parts of your day and find joy too. I hope you find the life-giving parts of your life and soak it in until you have a smile on your face. I can’t help but think there will be a smile on God’s face too as He might say, “So glad you noticed what I put there for you!”
